Can you determine suffocation as cause of death on a body decomposing for a year?

if someone was murdered and buried in the ground and the body was not discovered for a year, when the autopsy is done, can suffocation be conclusively determined as cause of death? wouldn't the body only be bones by that point? (just curious - not planning on murdering anyone, it's a storyline on a tv show.)
