Is it illegal to wear a gas mask in public?

i live in sioux city iowa (united states) and i was wondering if it is illegal to wear my gas mask in public like when i ride my bike and i am 16 for say a cop came up and tryed to take it? what do i say so i dont come off rude but yet get my point across that its mine and i can wear it ******(if it is legal)*******
